The following must now be added to all your written instructions created by Troop/ Detachment Cdrs. The MSSC will now be seen as complying with new legislation (the green impact on training).

Exercise Environmental Control Measures Care for the Environment

FIRE RISK.

General. As there is a permanent fire risk in all areas, wood should never be burned on. Should a fire occur, all trg in the area is to cease and all ranks are to assist in extinguishing the fire. Trg is not to continue until all danger is passed. The senior officer present is to ensure that the burnt area is observed for at least a further 2 hours in case the fire should restart.

Trees, Shrubs Hedges and fences. These are not to be cut or broken down under any circumstances.

Cut Log Piles. The forestry Blocks are worked and the cut logs are often left in piles in situ or nearby. Logs are not to be removed from these piles.

Gates. Gates and barriers are to be kept closed.

Walls. Stones and boulders that have been dislodged from walls are to be replaced.

Wire. Avoid laying wire across tracts unless buried, especially those that show signs of being used by riders. There may be circumstances in which it is acceptable to bury wire under appropriately marked, horizontally placed, right angle pickets. Leave wire no longer than the tactical scenario demands.

Litter. Clear the training area of all litter (Service or otherwise) prior to leaving the area. Under NO circumstances is litter to be left or buried. Offenders will be required to clean the areas and units may be banned from training in future.

Derelict Structures. The relics of many structures from the war are still in evidence on many Commons. Some have been converted into bat hibernacula supervised by English Nature that are secured to prevent unauthorised entry. All building unless prior authorisation has been approved should not be approached or entry attempted.

Latrines. The digging of latrines on all common land is forbidden. Whenever there is a requirement for latrines to be used by instructors or students, Elsans are to be used. They are to be emptied at approved sights. All Elsans are to be sited to provide maximum privacy using natural cover and / or hessian screens but outside the Water Catchment Areas.

Animals. Precautions are to be taken to ensure that livestock (particularly horses), game, wildlife and nests are not disturbed. Particular care is to be taken when using pyrotechnics or blank ammunition to avoid distress to animals. The use of shot guns and air rifles is strictly prohibited
